Megan’s educational background includes an undergraduate degree in Health Sciences from Western University, and a medical degree at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). She is currently completing the MPH program at McMaster alongside the PHPM residency program. Megan chose to pursue Public Health as she is passionate about the social determinants of health, health policy, and health equity. Megan recommends McMaster’s PHPM program because of the supportive resident group and faculty.

Fun Fact: During her first year of residency, Megan started a flower farm and learned techniques in floral design as a creative outlet.

I am studying public health because I am passionate about improving the health of populations and addressing health disparities on a broader scale.

My educational background includes completing an MD from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, an MPH and DTMH from the University of Liverpool, and Community Medicine Specialty Training from University College Hospital, Ibadan.

I chose the McMaster Public Health and Preventive Medicine residency program for its diverse learning opportunities in public health at both local and national levels. The program’s public health specialists and vibrant resident community create a supportive and enriching learning environment.

For prospective students, my advice is to tailor your application to highlight your passion for public health, showcase relevant experiences, and demonstrate how the program aligns with your career goals—don’t be afraid to let your unique strengths shine.

Fun fact: I enjoy dancing and watching Hallmark movies. One accomplishment I am particularly proud of is starting a nonprofit that provides food support to vulnerable families in Nigeria.

Dr. Emma McDermott, MD, MGA, is a second year Public Health and Preventative Medicine (with integrated Family Medicine) Resident at McMaster University. She received her MD from Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine. Prior to medical school, she was a Master of Global Affairs student at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid, Spain in a joint program with the University of Prince Edward Island, where she also received her Bachelor of Science degree. She is passionate about global health, sustainable development, and health equity, with a particular interest in the field of planetary health, sustainable health systems, and medical leadership.
